Padraig misses the cut at this years third Major as he adds a 74 to his opening round of 77 to have the weekend off at Shinnecock Hills. Starting on the back nine, he was one over par after five holes but then went through a sticky patch where he dropped four shots to finish the nine in 40 shots. It was an uphill battle from there, but to his credit he played the front nine in one under par, with a solitary birdie at the par five 5th hole. It was a very tough test this week with only ten players in the field breaking par going into the weekend. Seven under leads.
Padraig opens his account at the US Open with a seven over par round of 77. In very blustery conditions, the field struggled to cope with the green complexes which were, in fairness, slowed down somewhat to accomadate the weather forecast. Padraig opened with two pars but dropped seven shots in nine holes where he failed to get to grips with the severity of the course. To his credit, he finished with seven straight pars but will need something under par on Friday to make the cut.
Padraig tees it up this week at the U.S. Open on one of the most iconic courses in America, Shinnecock Hills. It’s a brute, playing to a par of 70 and stretching to 7,440 yards. J.J. Spaun is your defending champion but the last time it was played at Shinnecock, back in 2018, Brooks Koepka was the champion with a one over par score! Eight over par made the cut that week and this course is not for the faint hearted. As usual for a Major, the field is stacked this week and a side note to watch is the attempt by the world’s number one player, Scottie Scheffler, to complete the career grand slam! Plenty of excitement guaranteed and only the best will survive this test! Padraig is in good form and will relish the stern examination that Shinnecock poses!
